Is Stephen Fry’s Age Gap Too Much?

Stephen Fry is now married! Congratulations to him! However, most people are ignoring this happy fact and concentrating on the fact that his new husband is 30 years younger than him.
Stephen Fry and husband

They seem to believe that 30 years is too big of an age gap for the 57 year old to go for, and that things will only go wrong. We’ve heard everything so far, from “his new husband is only after his money”, to “Stephen just wants a younger man. It won’t last.”

So, how much of an age gap is too much? Does it ever matter, or is it just a matter of preference?

The age equation

Believe it or not, there is an actual equation to work out exactly how young is “too young” for you. What you are supposed to do is take your age, half it, and then add seven to that. This equation then gives you the magical number that is an age for you to date acceptably.

To give you an example, if a 30 year old wants to date someone, they cannot be younger than 22 (15 plus 7). 21? No, no, that is not allowed. It is not acceptable. Don’t you dare!

For me, this magical equation makes me nervous. A friend of mine is 24, and very mature for her age. According to this equation, she would be okay dating a 19 year old. However, I doubt society would see it that way. In fact, when I mentioned this to her she looked horrified that there was such a thing as a minimum age!

If we were to take Stephen Fry’s age (57) and applied the equation here, his husband would not be acceptable. The acceptable age for Stephen Fry would be 35, not 27 as his new husband is!

Ridiculous idea

There is also one to work out the maximum acceptable age, where you take seven from your age and then double the number you have. In the case of a 30 year old, that would be 46. For my friend, it would be 34. In Stephen Fry’s case, it would be 100!

Who came up with this equation?! People are using this equation to justify the fact that Stephen Fry’s husband might be too young for him, but according to this it would be fine for him to marry someone who is 100!

In my mind, a minimum or maximum acceptable age doesn’t exist. As long as they are of legal age and you are both perfectly happy and comfortable with it, without worrying what others might say, why would it be an issue?

As for Stephen Fry and his husband, I wish them the best of luck for their future together. Hopefully they can overcome this gossip and have a happy life together. But what do you think?
