Offensive Tweet Under Police Investigation!

A friend of mine recently compared the controversial Katie Hopkins to getting your bikini line waxed – you might think you’re ready for it, but nothing can prepare for you for the shock, pain, and embarrassment that comes from it.

Everytime we hear her name we think we can guess what it is going to be… and yet we are still shocked. It seemed the controversial queen has been at it again, this time targeting the Scottish and Ebola patients.

Unbelievable

When I first went onto Twitter and saw that the top trending hashtages were ‘Ebola’ and ‘Katie Hopkins’, I found myself thinking that maybe she has it and would be tweeting to raise awareness.

How naïve was I?

The tweet in question is not only hugely disrespectful to a Glaswegian nurse who is suffering from Ebola, but it also pokes fun at the Scottish independence referendum, where close voting of 55% no to 45% yes meant Scotland would remain a part of the United Kingdom.

Her first tweet read: “Glaswegian ebola patient moved to London’s Royal Free Hospital. Not so independent when it matters most are we jocksville?”

Nine minutes later, when Katie Hopkins was clearly unimpressed by the small number of retweets and responses she had, she decided to follow it up with a further comment: “Little sweaty jocks, sending us Ebola bombs in the form of sweaty Glaswegians just isn’t cricket. Scottish NHS sucks.”

…you can guess where this is going, can’t you?

When social media users got their hands on it, you can imagine what happened next. Comments such as “Just when you thought Katie Hopkins couldn’t get any more vile” and “At least Ebola is somewhat treatable. There is no known cure for Katie Hopkins” flooded Twitter, and people began to demand some form of action.

Rightly so! I don’t know about you, but I am getting fed up of the disgusting things she says and gets away with. I keep hoping that she will turn around and say it has all been a big joke, that she’s seen the error of her ways, and disappears to a far-off land where we never have to hear from her again.

So far, though, it simply hasn’t happened. Maybe she needs to make a New Year’s resolution to keep it shut?

Protest

Making inquiries

Thankfully, something is being done. Scottish police are now making inquiries after hundreds have demanded action against her.

Detective Inspector Glyn Roberts of Police Scotland confirmed that “inquiries are ongoing into the nature of these tweets and to establish any potential criminality” after they received a high number of complaints.

He also went on to say that “Police Scotland will thoroughly investigate any reports of offensive or criminal behaviour online and anyone found to be responsible will be robustly dealt with.”

So, Katie will get her comeuppance and all will be right with the world again, yes? At least that is what you think would happen, but the ex-Apprentice star just doesn’t know when to keep her mouth shut, does she?

Fighting back

Now that an investigation is under way, Katie has decided to rear her ugly head again and has used her column to hit out at those who reported her.

In a lengthy rant she said how sad it was that people “dial the cop shop every time we feel offended online”. She went on to say that “the freedom to say only things that are polite is no real freedom of speech at all” and that she should be allowed to post whatever she wants.

If she feels her freedom of speech is being taken away, then it is understandable that she is upset. After all, there is nothing in the rules to say she can’t post the abusive things she does, is there?

“Targeted abuse or harassment is… a violation of the Twitter Rules and Terms of Service.”

It seems that there is!

Is it time that Twitter takes action against Katie Hopkins? This isn’t the first time she has posted something disgusting on social media, and I doubt it will be the last. Does she need action taking against her to get her to stop or should we leave her to it?
