Gay American Footballer Binned By Team!

Earlier this year, the Escort Scotland blog brought you the story of the first openly gay American footballer Michael Sam being drafted to the St Louis Rams in the NFL. Well, unfortunately things haven’t gone too well for him in the last week.

For those who don’t know, there are a maximum of 53 players in an NFL squad, and in the cutdown from 75 to 53, the Sam got binned.

Well, obviously Twitter and the rest of social media went mental upon hearing the news. Unsurprisingly, the reaction was mixed.

Rife Homophobia

I always talk about how more tolerant society is becoming, with people like the male Aberdeen TS escorts being accepted by people nationwide. Well, it seems society has a way to go, as the level of homophobia which accompanied Sam’s release was incredible.

There were horrible comments stating the Rams players could now ‘shower in peace’ and that individuals were happy that the ‘faggot was cut’. What kind of mentality must a person have to come out with such vile statements? Don’t people realise we are just human beings and someone should be judged on their merits?

Specialist Treatment

However, I was equally annoyed with some of the ‘gay rights’ groups who were insisted on telling us it was a ‘dark day for the NFL’ and that it the cut was proof that ‘Sam was used’ and that ‘the move proved that homophobia was rife in the NFL’.

OK, I am all for gay rights and equality, but as an American Football fan, I know that the Rams had a strong defensive line anyway and the reason Sam didn’t get the job is because they had better players than him on the books.

Real equality is people being judged equally. It is not a special interest group expecting specialist treatment.

Sam to his credit is has nothing but good things to say about the Rams organisation.

“I want to thank the entire Rams organisation and the city of St Louis for giving me this tremendous opportunity and allowing me to show I can play at this level. I look forward to continuing to build on the progress I made here toward a long and successful career.

He stated on Twitter “The most worthwhile things in life rarely come easy, this is a lesson I’ve always known. The journey continues.”

A Bright Future

Also, Sam played well enough in his time with the Rams to prove he is capable of being an NFL player.

Who knows; one day people may realise how irrelevant his sexuality is and just concentrate on him being a good player.

That will be the proof we have come a long way!
