New research by Essex University has suggested that the shape of someone\u2019s hands could determine whether you are gay or not.<\/p>\n

The study looked at 18 sets of female twins, each set with one straight twin and one lesbian twin. They discovered that the \u2018gay\u2019 female twin tended to have more \u2018male-typical\u2019 hands than her sister.<\/p>\n

Finger Size<\/h2>\n

What are \u2018male typical hands\u2019 you may ask? Well, it means there\u2019s a difference between the length of the index finger and the length of the ring finger. Women\u2019s index and ring fingers are usually of the same length.<\/p>\n

Scientists say this is because they were exposed to testosterone in the womb.<\/p>\n

When it comes to male twins, 14 pairs were looked at. The gay twin had slightly more male typical hands, but the difference was less pronounced than with females.<\/p>\n

So what does this mean? It suggests that if you\u2019re gay, your ring and index fingers will be different lengths. If you are straight, then they will be of the same length.<\/p>\n

\u2018Genetic Differences\u2019<\/h2>\n

Dr Tuesday Watts, from the department of psychology, said: \u201cBecause identical twins, who share 100% of their genes, can differ in their sexual orientations, factors other than genetics must account for the differences.<\/p>\n

\u201cResearch suggests that our sexuality is determined in the womb and is dependent on the amount of male hormone we are exposed to or the way our individual bodies react to that hormone, with those exposed to higher levels of testosterone being more likely to be bisexual or homosexual.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause of the link between hormone levels and difference in finger lengths, looking at someone\u2019s hands could provide a clue to their sexuality.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is fair to say that sexuality is a complicated thing, so gay people, if you find yourself with ring and index fingers of the same size, trust me, you are still gay.<\/p>\n
