But empirical research is always the best, and that\u2019s why there has been a whole bounty of studies into the correlation between sex and happiness, both for the individual and couples as a whole. Hence the traditional notion: more sex = happiness. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"inline\">A Rather Interesting Study<\/h2>\n<p>Shockingly, however, this might not as straight forward as you\u2019d think. This week Playboy reported a study from the Journal of Economic Behaviour &#038; Organisation, which involved 128 heterosexual married couples who on average had sex about 5-6 times a month. Half were assigned to get busy 100% more often (approximately 12 times a week), whilst the others were instructed to keep to their regular routine. <\/p>\n<p>And what they found surprises us. Firstly, the married couples instructed to double-up on their sex routine only achieved a 40% increase on average. Secondly, according to the study\u2019s researchers, the couples were less happy: <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurprisingly, however, an increase in sexual frequency did not translate to an increase in happiness. In fact, just the opposite was observed. T<strong>he couples who increased their sexual frequency were LESS happy than the control group for all three months of the study.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whilst the researchers did provide a whole bunch of speculation as to the reason for this, the answer seems pretty simple to us. They felt shit because they failed to have more sex \u2013 if you\u2019re unable to find the motivation to have sex with your spouse, that\u2019s probably going to raise some serious questions about your happiness as a couple. A dude\u2019s number one mission in life is essentially to stick his penis into things, and no one wants to fail in that essential goal.  <\/p>\n<p>And this is the problem with these types of studies \u2013 they\u2019re so focused on couple interactions and not just sex generally with multiple partners. There\u2019s a whole other bunch of psychological rubbish going on behind an actual relationship that gets in the way of what matters \u2013 the fantastic biological compulsion for sex, and the consequential smiles on one\u2019s face. <\/p>\n<p>So we\u2019re just not going to bother delving into the philosophical discussions about happiness, and whether it\u2019s psychologically attainable. For us, the answer is simple.
