I have been to Scotland many times but this time I decided to dig beneath the surface and feed my thirst for all things historic, political and cultural rather than just pass through this ancient country. As always, when you take time to read, explore, observe and ask the facts are often stranger than fiction.

Amazingly the name of Scotland comes from the Latin Scotus, meaning Irish! It refers to the Dal Riata tribe who came from modern County Antrim in Northern Ireland and migrated to western Scotland to set up a Gaelic speaking kingdom. In fact the word Scotia ("land of the Gaels") was initially used to refer to Ireland! By the 11th century at the latest, Scotia was being used to refer to (Gaelic-speaking) Scotland north of the Forth alongside Albania or Albany, both derived from the Gaelic word Alba, a word which most modern day Scots will recognise.

I visited Scotland’s capital Edinburgh where the Old and New Towns have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site like Rome and Venice and “Auld Reekie” was designated the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature in 2004. JK Rowling wrote her first Harry Potter novel here and Sean Connery delivered milk in the city. The annual Arts Festival attracts nearly half a million visitors and I just had to go see Scotland’s very own Parliament and, morbidly, Mary Queen of Scots death mask!

Glasgow would not be Glasgow without experiencing the intensity of an Old Firm derby match between Celtic and Rangers. Derby matches in other cities don’t quite create the same atmosphere in the town. Every door had bouncers! Though not the capital Glasgow turns out to be the largest city with the largest economy. I found it really easy to navigate around on my shopping sprees since the city is laid out in a grid more like American cities. The aforementioned Mary Queen of Scots lost her crown and kingdom here at the battle of Langside in 1568. Much like London but less well known Glasgow suffered a great plague in 1647 and not one but two huge fires in 1652 and 1677 respectively followed by a great flood in 1712. Dundee , the city of “jute, jam and journalism” turned out to be equally fascinating. The plans for the redevelopment of the city are and have been bold and confident, based around modern industries such as digital entertainment as opposed to the old textiles and whaling ...yes whaling...to provide whale oil for the jute mills of all things! And who would have thought a city would become world famous for the production of marmalade! I learned that Dundee had suffered greatly throughout the many wars in Scotland’s history due to its strategic location and whilst I had always associated Irish immigration with Glasgow it was also a huge feature of Dundee’s expansion in the 19th century.

Inverness is the ancient stronghold of the Picts and turns out to one of Europe’s fastest growing cities probably most famous for being close to the site of the Battle of Culloden and like the all the cities I visited it too suffered during the many wars of Scotland’s turbulent history. In common with the other cities (and this really impressed me about Scotland during my trip) Inverness has re-invented itself through modern industry and centres of learning but still sticks to its cultural roots with its love of bagpipes and Highland Games.

The last city on my trip was Aberdeen, where, as if to prove the stereotype about Scottish thriftiness, there have been found more secret hoards of medieval coins than anywhere else in Britain! And the city used to be the UK capital of envelope production! To continue the theme of education Aberdeen had two universities which up until 1858 was the same number as ALL of England . Of course it is an oil town but I didn’t realise that half the North Sea’s recoverable oil has not yet been exploited. For those interested in sport water polo began here on the river Dee in 1863.

I deliberately took a great interest in the cities of Scotland on this trip and the more I dug the more I wanted to know. I found a place with many layers of fascinating history, proud of it’s past yet embracing a very modern future and the people were exceptionally friendly and generous. I will be back to spend more time in bonnie Scotland as soon as I can.

Landing too late to enjoy a breakfast in Belfast’s most exclusive hotel I decided to seat myself at the window in the cocktail bar and enjoy some tea and scones whilst partaking of one of my favourite pastimes, people watching, something we do not do well in these islands but which is done with so much style by the French, Spanish and Italians (who have one big advantage of course–sunshine!).

St Patrick’s Day seems to get bigger each year in Ireland. It was always traditionally much bigger around the world where the Irish diaspora had settled. (This year even the Leaning Tower of Pisa was illuminated green!) With the coming of prosperity and self confidence in the South and the coming of peace in the North the patron saint’s day appears to be much more widely celebrated, accepted and cosmopolitan.

The weather was great and from my window I saw young and old and people from many nations walking by with Irish flags, Irish rugby shirts, other Irish sports shirts, green stove pipe hats, false red leprechaun beards, shamrock painted faces, shamrocks in lapels and all manner of green attire. To be honest I had not realised it would be such a big family occasion and it made me wonder why the Irish, Scot and Welsh rightly celebrate their national day so fervently whereas in England it hardly seems to get a mention.

England did however trounce Ireland at the rugby match on the same day, a point I decided not to mention to anyone I met!

As I was in the cocktail bar it would have been churlish not to have a glass of my favourite wine and a champagne cocktail whilst waiting for what turned out to be a delicious lunch. Suitably replenished I checked into the very stylish boutique hotel which I had chosen and I relaxed and pampered myself before getting all dressed up and going to one of Belfast finest restaurants for a superb meal and more people watching....fascinating, especially checking out the dress sense and the footwear!. People are different in all cities, they operate to different norms and yet we are all the same. Irish traditional music was wafting out from the bars and the streets were still full of St Patrick’s Day revellers who by this stage were a bit worse for wear , singing their heads off but still very good natured.

Back to the hotel for a great night’s sleep, a fantastic full English (or should that be Irish?) breakfast then off to my friends house out in the country. When I was checking out the receptionist who was from the Philipines said she could not believe how much people could drink in Belfast....and not just on St Patrick’s Day!

Out in the beautiful countryside my friend pointed out the mountain where St Patrick, a 16 year old British boy from Wales kidnapped by Irish raiders had looked after sheep in his 6 years as a slave. He escaped from there, went to the coast, took a boat, became a priest, rose through the ranks and then returned to Christianise Ireland during the second half of the 5th century. The mountain is still a site of pilgrimage on St Patrick’s Day. People such as Patrick people amaze me in that ,nowadays, with all our technology , education and transport there are still people who cannot manage to get safely from one town to another only a few miles apart!

That evening I went to a very fine restaurant in a local market town where I had perhaps one too many glasses of Merlot which resulted in a very deep sleep on my return home. I had to get up at a very uncivilised hour to catch my flight back but I had a great time and an insight into one of Ireland’s special days. Culture, history and politics have always interested me and there is no substitute to being close to the action to understand things better. I am glad I came over.
