Dunfermline is a town in Fife, Scotland. It lies on high ground, three miles from the northern shore of the Firth of Forth.

The town was first recorded in the 11th century, when Malcolm III married Saint Margaret at the church in Dunfermline between 1068 and 1070. It remained the royal seat of power until 1603 when James VI relocated the Scottish Court to London with the Union of the Crowns.

There was a steady decline in Dunfermline's fortunes until the 18th century. The introduction of the of the linen industry in 1718 revived the struggling town's fortunes. This was due to there being enough water to power the mills, and the nearby ports along the Fife coast.
