Dunfermline is a town in Fife, Scotland. It lies on high ground, three miles from the northern shore of the Firth of Forth.
The town was first recorded in the 11th century, when Malcolm III married Saint Margaret at the church in Dunfermline between 1068 and 1070. It remained the royal seat of power until 1603 when James VI relocated the Scottish Court to London with the Union of the Crowns.
There was a steady decline in Dunfermline's fortunes until the 18th century. The introduction of the of the linen industry in 1718 revived the struggling town's fortunes. This was due to there being enough water to power the mills, and the nearby ports along the Fife coast.
The late 1940's saw housing being developed with temporary prefabs and Swedish timber accomodation being constructed around areas such as Kingseat and Townhill. Council housing focused on Abbeyview, whilst private housing focused to the north of Garvock Hill and on the site of West Picorthie Farm.
Dunfermline is served by the A907, which meets the M90 and A92 to the east of the town at Halbeath Interchange. This connects the town to Perth, Edinburgh and Kirkcaldy.
The main bus terminus is located on a site to the north of the town centre. Two railway stations serve the town; Dunfermline Town to the south of the town centre, and Dunfermline Queen Margaret to the east of the town, close to Queen Margaret Hospital.
